.Dubizzle’s tagline says it all: Buy or Find
Anything. In free, open markets this may
seem like a simple proposition. In growing
economies throughout the Middle East and
North Africa (MENA), it’s a unique and
exciting one.
Launched in 2005 by two American
ex-pats living in Dubai, Dubizzle is now
the leading consumer-to-consumer classifieds
portal in the UAE, generating hundreds of
millions of page views per month. And it
is rapidly expanding its reach throughout
MENA. The company offers fast access
to job listings, properties for sale and
lease, and a wide range of goods from
housewares to Hummers – all delivered
in the user’s choice of English, French
or Arabic. In less than a decade, Dubizzle
has become a strong online presence
in every major Arab market including
Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait,
Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia,
and the UAE.
SUPPORTING REGIONAL GROWTH
WITH PRIVATE CLOUD
Dubizzle’s decision to adopt Rackspace
Private Cloud was primarily driven by its need
to deploy resources geographically closer
to customers and maximize performance.
Dubizzle uses Cloud Load Balancers, Cloud
Files and Cloud Database offerings to assure
seamless service for its e-customers.
“We like to have the fastest classifieds
platform available,” Sebastian Dietzel,
Dubizzle’s Director of Technology, explains.
“The decision (to move to the Rackspace
Private Cloud in 2009) was made because we
were looking to improve the quality of our
practice. The main benefit was the flexibility,
agility and efficiency that were brought in
with the solution.”
As new Dubizzle communities form with
increasing frequency, each one must be up
and running quickly while supporting ever-increasing traffic volume. Dubizzle receives
more than 300 million page views per
month. To keep up with this growth across
multiple regions, Dubizzle is leveraging
the private cloud to augment their existing
infrastructure.
“We have developed in-house a system that
manages our services, or as we call them
‘cloud types,’” Dietzel says. “Our cloud
types are versioned. The system basically has
two parts: a ‘master’ that is responsible for
creating and deleting nodes or servers for a
“I know that Rackspace just
happens to have hosting as one
of its businesses, but what you
actually do is support.”
